Can Magnetics Cure The Headache Pain | Migraines | Studies Say Yes

Magnetic Pain Relief For Headaches and Migraines

Magnetic therapy is getting a lot of attention, as it goes more mainstream. The Mayo Clinic has an approved magnetic device that is said to cure migraine headaches. Newer technology, longer studies, and improved medical magnetic products are aiding chronic pain sufferers with conditions that are caused by inflammation such as: arthritis, fibromyalgia, circulatory problem joint inflammation, leg pain, wrist pain, arm pain, migraine headaches,  chronic headaches, and many other chronic pain conditions are finding relief and living life instead of tolerating it.

The Mystery Behind The Common Headache

There cannot be many people who have not suffered from a headache and yet, despite the fact that they are so commonplace, their cause is a mystery. Furthermore, though we often talk about a headache there are actually various different types of headache.

For example, migraines affect approximately ten percent of the US population (roughly 28 million people) and attack three times more women than men. Yet, although such a large number of people regularly suffer from migraine headaches, we still have little idea about what causes them. There are of course several theories, the latest of which is that they are caused by the interaction of chemicals within the brain like serotonin and the nerve cells of the brain, but we really do not know for sure that this is the cause.

Cluster headaches, which are far rarer but also much more intense than migraines, affect roughly one person in three hundred and tend to attack men much more than women. Again however we only have a provisional idea about just what leads to the stabbing pain that is often felt behind one eye in these particularly painful headaches. A few people think that a problem with the hypothalamus could be the cause but, at this time, there is no sound evidence in support of this theory.

The commonest type of headache is what we normally refer to as ordinary or tension-type headaches and once again these are only partly understood. Here the list of possible causes is extremely long indeed and includes everything from what we eat to the amount of stress we are under. Attempting to pinpoint a precise cause has proved to difficult so far however and just what produces the common everyday headache is still a mystery.

Perhaps the only saving grace is that there is a large number of medications available to cope with the different types of headache and the majority of these are effective and safe for most sufferers.

Migraines have long proved difficult to treat and the original ergot drugs used to treat them had varying degrees of success. These were then largely replaced by triptans which proved to be more effective but which sadly had some disadvantages. Nowadays however a new generation of triptan drugs are proving safe, show fewer side effects and are effective for most sufferers.

There has also been an increase in preventative medicines used for migraine headaches like beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, anti-seizure medications, anti-depressants and various other drugs which are in common use for the treatment of other well known conditions. For some individuals these drugs will indeed stop headaches from attacking at all, while in others they can reduce the frequency with which headaches occur.

For everyday headaches traditional over-the-counter medicines such as paracetamol and aspirin (which have been with us for over 100 years) and newer drugs such as ibuprofen provide effective and safe relief in the majority of cases. For people who suffer from regular headaches though care does need to be taken because even the humble aspirin can have side effects if taken too frequently.

In spite of the fact that there is still so much that we do not know about what causes severe headaches the fact that we can treat them successfully is a comfort to the many sufferers and especially to the large number of people who suffer from frequently extremely debilitating migraine headaches. However, surprisingly enough, only about half of all those who suffer from migraines ever seek treatment and so there are millions of people today who are needlessly suffering in silence.

If you are bothered by headaches and find that simple over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol or aspirin do not work then, rather than sit and suffer in silence, drop in to see your doctor who will almost certainly be able to help.

Many Different Types Of Headaches

Posted by admin | Health | Tuesday 16 June 2009 6:52 am

There are several types of headaches, and the medical community has established a definite set of categories for each.  The vast majority of headaches that patients suffer can be easily fit into the first category, or primary headache.  Primary headaches afflict millions every day, and are not a serious or life threatening issue.  That said, primary headaches can be quite painful on some occasions, or can become a chronic problem.  Although this isn’t life threatening, it sometimes presents an obstacle to daily functioning.  Fixing these kinds of primary headaches can be crucial to restoring enjoyment of daily life activities.  Correcting issues regarding primary headaches is usually possible with just over the counter medication.

Cluster headaches present with a far greater pain level.  Although not life threatening in itself, the associated is very serious and often debilitating.  Cluster headaches are so called because they occur in chronological groupings, and can be very hard to predict.  This means that treatment over the course of a lifetime is difficult, resulting in first occurences that are hard to avoid.  A cluster headache usually prevents any daily function.  Pain usually centers behind one or both eyes, and presents with visible symptoms like runny and watery eyes and nose.  Patients may undergo a pain crisis when presented with a cluster headache.  Treatment of this pain should be the immediate and overriding concern.  Over the counter medications may do little to help under these circumstances.

Secondary headaches are far rarer, and signify an underlying issue.  As the name implies, a secondary headache results from another issue.  Secondary headaches signify a problem in the brain that may or may not be life threatening.  In the most serious of cases, a secondary headache can be a sign of a brain tumor.  There are dozens of other possible secondary headache causes.  Regular headaches should be a sign to see the doctor.

The vast majority of headaches suffered fit into the primary headache category. What are the causes of headaches?  As many as 90% of primary headaches are caused by so called “tension” headaches.  A tension headache takes place when cranial muscles contract, putting a painful amount of pressure on the head.  The pain usually centers around the temples.  Relief can usually be found with a variety of over the counter medications.
